Identifying and qualifying the right M&A target can be a full time job, timing will be critical. Founders will always believe that their business is worth considerably more than reality dictates. However their opportunity candle burns in equal proportion to the asking price – and desperation is often a great leveller.

Once you are on the M&A trail the all consuming nature of the chase can often mean that you become distracted from the fundamentals of running and growing your business. Buying a company should ideally be handled by specialists to qualify the opportunity ‘in or out’ and who should then be able to identify any potential show stoppers within the minimum possible time.
